28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”-Matthew 11:28-30

I am thanking God for the end of another workweek. This week went by fast but I am exhausted. This morning during my prayer a devotional time, I was reminded of this classic scripture in Matthew 11.  We must take a moment to take inventory of our hearts. God has called us to live abundant and thriving lives and not be in survival mode for the rest of our lives. Let us take a moment so we can rest and restore our souls. I am just doing a breakdown of verse 28.

  1. Come to me: Jesus told us to come to him. We should never delay coming to Jesus. Jesus does not expect perfection. He just wants us to come to him with our questions, failures, mistakes, doubt, lack and more. The best decision you can make is to sit at feet of Jesus.
  2. All you who are weary and burdened: What are you carrying today? Could it be anxiety, fear, depression, heartbreak, addiction, pride, illness, hatred and more? Who are you carrying?  Could it be yourself, family, loved ones, significant others, friends and more? Whatever you are carrying or burdened with should be given to Jesus. What better place for us to out anything that has worn us out or is keeping us up at night. Jesus will do a better job than us.
  3. I will give you rest: Jesus is promising rest to us if we come to him and admit we are weary and burdened. We need to know that there is nothing or no person in the world that can give us rest better than Jesus. His rest is full of love and is available to us every day.

As you pray and seek God’s face, rest in him. You may have to go to bed earlier so you can sleep in this weekend. You can take a nap. Naps are so refreshing. You can disconnect from your phone, email, social media and more for a few hours. Carve out some time with Jesus so he can replace your weariness with rest. He will take your burdens and lighten your load. I am raking m own advice. I am sleeping in and being intentional about coming to Jesus. I thank God in advance for refreshing out souls.
