I love sports. I have been watching sports most of my life. My favorite sports are soccer (Chelsea FC Blues), football (Baltimore Ravens), baseball (Baltimore Orioles), basketball, tennis (Serena and Venus Williams and Rafa Nadal ) and more. Yes, I love the Olympics and World Cup. No matter where you live, you may admire a team or an athlete that is not nearby. Either way, you can still represent your team or player and be connected to your fan base. Here are some ways I stay connected to my favorite athletes and teams.
Stay connected to 24 hour sports channels: I am subscribed to all soccer, NFL and tennis channels. These channels keep you updated on your favorite sport and well as get you excited before the season starts. I love NFL redzone.
Sports Podcasts: I love sports podcasts. I like to get a synopsis of what is going on while on the go. I also like to get balanced opinions about what is going on in the world of sports. My favorite podcasts in no particular order are: Around the Horn, Pardon the Interruption and Undisputed. I do not agree with everything that is said but it helps me stay informed.
Follow your team(s) and players on social media: I love interacting with my favorite players and teams on social media. When I get a post liked or even a response, it makes my day. Also, this is a great way to connect with other fans who love your team. You can encourage one another before, during and after the game or match.
Find clubs or groups centered around your team: There are organizations that bring fans together who love the same team no matter where you live. Since I am in Baltimore, it is easy to connect with Ravens and Orioles fans. Blues fans are everywhere and we have Chelsea FC USA to give us locations of local Chelsea friendly gatherings around the USA and also connect us with Blues fans from around the world.
Buy Team Gear and more: Wearing team colors and gear is a great way to stay connected to your team as well as showing team pride. When I see the colors, blue, purple or black, it makes me smile.
Is your team coming to your town?: When your favorite team or player is out-of-town, you can try to see them nearby. Chelsea played an exhibition game in 2015 in DC and I was beyond excited when I attended. It saved me a trip to London. It was awesome to see the team I had been following. Tennis has tournaments around the USA all year around.
Download Your team’s schedule to your calendar: My life is so much easier knowing when my team is playing so I can schedule things around that. So if my team has a bye week or a break, that opens up time for being social or resting. Chelsea has so many games beyond PL games so this keeps me organized.
DVR: I know everyone will not agree but I know I cannot watch every game because of time zone differences, personal or professional obligations and more. So I have a DVR so I can watch the game at my own speed on my own time. So I am never worried about a game played while I am otherwise busy. My handy DVR ensures that I can watch the game later and be fully present at whatever I am doing.
It is okay to have friends and family who do not have the same opinion. I actually enjoy having the friendly back and forth about our respective teams and players. So here is to agreeing to disagree and enjoying sports.
